The Mosman Art Gallery presents the 62nd annual Mosman Art Prize, the longest running and most prestigious municipal art prize in Australia. The winning entries form the basis of the Mosman Art Collection, a valuable and historic collection which surveys Australian painting since 1947. Each year close to 900 entries are received in one day at the Mosman Art Gallery. This year, the inaugural 1947 prize winner Margaret Olley AC will be the guest judge for the competition.

The theme for 2009 is I Paint Because...
I paint because…
I have a profound love of paint. I love feeling in control of the medium but also being completely controlled by it. I adore the intimacy and immediacy of the medium. I relish the capacity for boldness and courage that it allows, but also the amazing sensitivity and tenderness that is possible.
The intimacy of the medium enables me to celebrate the sensitivity and beauty of the female figure. It allows me to explore works that depict beauty, grace and harmony and to present an intimate look at womanhood. My work explores and honors unique female artforms and iconography and I see a strong relationship between the intensity of the needle and the concentration of the paintbrush.
